It is true that too much sugar in one’s diet is not healthy but the amount of sugar in a serving of these preserves is not that great. The real harm comes from processed foods such as boxed cereals; where the cereal does not even taste sweet and more sugar added; and soda drinks such as Pepsi and Colas. There is no other way and artificial sweeteners are harmful to health and does not kill bacteria so the preserves would not keep.

just a note, I too have problems with getting a good stand with beets. try this, after you plant the beet seed place a plank over the row, raise it daily to see when the seeds have sprouted, when they have sprouted remove the cover. then you have a root system developed that will help hold them in place a little better. almost anything will work for the cover, just not too heavy so as not to pack the soil. Thanks for the recipe.

I go along with what you have said. I usually don’t purchase egg-nog because I forget it exists. I don’t have all the ingredients like vanilla; spice; and half&half. Yet…I shall use your instructions. Uh…do you think that this recipe may add a few pounds on my skinny ol’ self?

Give brining a try Erika, you will be surprised at the difference it makes and it is not really that much extra work. My guess the bacon is used as a source of oil to help keep the skin sealed. I just rub the skin with a vegetable oil for that purpose.

Hi Kimberly We have a family tradition. Have a low temp 325C,place bacon on top and cover with foil until the last hour of cooking. Then baste every ten to fifteen minutes.I usually don’t have dry turkey. Thanks for your recipe anyways. Erika

Beets are very delicious fried in a little bit of olive or coconut oil. I cut off root and stems and peel; then just slice as thin or thick as you desire.

Hi Secretcorners Thanks for the beet pickle recipe.I have bookmarked it for now. Thanks for the warning about leaving the roots and top on. I have seen washed out looking beets too. Didn’t know why though. Thanks. PS: I usually put my beets into my juicer. Nothing better then Beet, Carrot, celery, strawberry, swiss chard and any other vegetable you can think of into this juice. Even my 2and a half year old grandson. Wonders never cease.
